Job Purpose
The
IT Architecture team in Emirates Group (Emirates Airline and dnata) is a
non-hierarchical, technically focused team formed with the vision to
build the Aviation World’s Top Architecture Team. The team consists of
more than 45 enthusiastic, hands-on, top-notch architects with IT
experience varying between 10 to 40 years , across various industries
and geographies.
The IT Architecture team is responsible for
delivering thought leadership and high quality solution architectures
supporting 400 plus projects across the organization. Within those
projects, Architects work closely with all other team members to ensure
the architecture and designs are aligned with the Enterprise
Architecture visions and strategies, fit for the business
purpose, innovative, secure and cost effective. Architects are also
responsible for delivering IT architecture strategies, maintenance of
the technology roadmap, developments of proof of concepts in niche
areas, research and adoption of new technologies & architecture
styles. The stewardship of reference architectures and patterns is also
part of the Architecture team’s mandate.
The team has capability covering various
architectural disciplines with deep expertise within subject areas such
as Enterprise Architecture, Solution Architecture, Mobility and Web,
Performance Engineering, Business Intelligence & Big Data,
Integration, Data & Information Architecture, Enterprise Content
Management, Unified Communications, Mainframe, Contact Center, Network,
Cloud and Server Virtualization. The team works in the spirit of
collaboration not just to deliver the right solutions to business but
also to foster talent within the team. Internal presentations on
emerging technology, thought leading discussions, Hackathons, Technical
reviews are some of the techniques used to encourage personal
development.
The back-bone is laid out on a set of Enterprise
Architecture Principles and Methods adopted from TOGAF. The principle
architecture documentation tool is Sparx Enterprise Architect with
Archimate for consistent modeling. The team manages 800 plus
technologies covering a multitude of functional domains. Java and
Oracle, Spring Frameworks, Angular JS, JBoss, TIBCO, O365 and VMWare are
samples of the technologies in use within the group. IT Architecture
has developed a number of reference architecture such as UI Reference
Architecture , Mobility Reference Architecture, Integration (SOA)
Reference Architecture, High Availability Reference Architecture and
Cloud Reference Architecture.
IT Architecture also leads proof of concepts (PoCs)
on some of the leading edge technologies such as Storm, Spark, Elastic
Search, Cassandra, NuoDB, MemSQL, Erlang, Data Lake, Hadoop &
Related Big Data Technologies, NLP & Machine Learning. A number of
these are already in the mainstream in Emirates’ production environment.
Areas of focus this year include the Internet of Things, End to End
Security Architecture, Information Architecture, Next Generation
Application Architecture among others. A number of PoCs are also planned
for technologies up such as Neo 4j, Couch DB, Scala, Netflix OSS &
Spring Cloud tool suites, Docker etc. in order to keep the broader
Emirates Group IT team abreast of best practices in the application of
new technologies.
Job Outline:
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of Architecture Guiding Principles, drawing on architectural knowledge and experience.
- Lead the development of new corporate IT standards, analysing and understanding potential impact of competing technologies, assessing their strategic significance, defining their strategic role and scope, roadmap, relationship to existing standards, and periodically reviewing our entire IT estate in the context of those standards.
- Lead the development and documentation of architectural patterns and solution designs for use in solutions. Provide expert consultancy and coaching on these to project teams.
- Track technologies and new business innovations, determine how they relate to our IT strategy, existing standards, platforms and patterns, and lead the work to amend existing assets or create new assets to reflect changes in the technology landscape.
- Lead the solution shaping phase for major (more than AED 5m) complex projects, taking full responsibility for the architecture of the solution. This involves developing a solution scenarios / stakeholder model, identifying appropriate strategic solution options, developing high level architectures for those options, leading the evaluation of the candidate architectures, selecting the preferred solution architecture, documenting that architecture and guiding the development team in its adoption and elaboration as a solution design.
- Provide expert advice to projects on technical and architectural standards, guiding them on the need to raise exception requests, develop new or amended standards, and on the appropriate use of architectural patterns.
- Lead solution design reviews and technical design reviews, ensuring that projects are following agreed corporate strategic direction and alignment to architectural standards and patterns.
- From time to time, lead a strategic incubator project that will take a strategically significant new or innovative technology or architectural approach. This involves assembling and managing the development team, taking full responsibility for the solution architecture, leading the design and development of the solution, and taking overall responsibility for the management of the project, its budget, timescales and dependencies. Such projects will create the foundations for corporate strategic platforms on which our future critical business systems will depend. Significant experience of major systems architecture is needed to ensure that a robust and scalable solution is developed.
- Manage, direct, inspire and coach the work and capability of STE, Principal Solution Architect resources as required, and engage in, and lead, a much wider virtual team of senior managers, technical and subject matter experts and business managers consisting of at least 20 individuals.
- Own, Manage and maintain the architecture roadmap of complex/large Projects, Products, Environments or Platforms.
Qualifications & Experience
Degree
or Honours (12+3 or equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering, or an
equivalent IT related discipline or equivalent experience.
Ideally
higher level business-related qualification, such as MBA - ideally
certification in at least one of the areas mentioned above.
Minimum 8
years experience in the development of distributed, mission critical
applications in heterogeneous environments/architectures for multi-user
systems.
Experience of detailed business system architecture and design
Preferably technical leadership and architecture experience.
Understanding of solution technologies such as Java/TPF/Oracle/BI/DW/ERP
Understanding of capability frameworks such as CMMI.
Understanding of TOGAF, Zachman and other Enterprise Architecture frameworks.
Understanding of industry standard development methods (e.g. RUP, SCRUM) Understanding of ITIL Framework.
Understanding of industry standard project management methods (e.g. PMBOK)
